A QUICK REVIEW OF THE RISE & RISE OF VIDEO SLOT MACHINES

The slots game was first introduced back in the 19th century. In the beginning, the machine had a crude design and could only be found in local arcade shops. What drew the crowds was the simplicity of the game itself. It was designed purely as a game of luck: just sit before the machine, put in a token, and press the lever.

The standard machine had three spinning wheels with different pictures. If all three wheels lined up with the same picture in the center, the player would win the jackpot! There was no way to influence the outcome of the machine, because it was all designed to be a game of luck.

And then, a mere century later, came the Video Slot.

Video slots stepped into the limelight in 1976; the very first one had a 19inch Sony TV as the display. What can we say, those were simpler times… They gained popularity quickly until in 1996 they became the undisputed star of Vegas. What happened in 1996? The “second screen” bonus game was introduced. Meaning, a completely different scenario was displayed during bonus rounds. It might be hard for us to imagine the excitement over this with the incredible 3D graphics and multiple storylines of today’s slot games, but, as we said, those were simpler times…

During that same time, the mid-90’s, video slots made another giant leap – from casino halls to the internet – and from there the video slot never looked back.

Wheel of Stars

You are watching, and listening to, a musical clock made of stars.

To make this, I downloaded public data from Hipparcos, a satellite launched by the European Space Agency in 1989 that accurately measured over a hundred thousand stars. The data I downloaded contains position, parallax, magnitude, and color information, among other things.

I used this information to plot the brightest stars, and cause them to revolve about Polaris (the North Star) very slowly, as thestars appear to do. Like the night sky, this is a sidereal time clock -- it takes nearly 24 hours for the stars to fully rotate. You'll notice some familiar constellations, such as the Big Dipper in there. As the stars cross zero and 180 degrees, indicated by the center line, the clock plays an individual note,or chime for each star. The pitch of the chime is based on the star's BV measurement (which roughly corresponds to color or temperature). The volume is based on the star's magnitude, or apparent brightness, and the stereo panning is based on the position on the screen (use headphones to hear it better).

Basically, this is a very literal kind of 'music of the spheres,' and is typical of my projects, which often involve circles and music. This idea for making a music box out of stars was a natural progression from some previous projects of mine, like the Whitney Music Box, and Musical Chess, which you might also enjoy.

Transfer Slotomania To New Phone

January 2010:
Hey! The Wheel was featured on Discover Magazine's Bad Astronomy Blog, and Universe Today this month! Cool beans.

A few of you have requested a stand-alone version to play on your computers without Internet access. Here it is (15 megs). You'll need the stand-alone version of the Adobe Flash player to run it.

October 2009:
Since this was featured on BoingBoing, I've had requests for MP3s, MIDI controllers, screen-savers, southern hemisphere variants, lower-pitched versions for those with tinnitus, and a parallax-controlled version.

Slotomania Does Not Load

Here's a 5-minute excerpt that crosses the Pleiades system. This was produced using a different synthesis system that also uses Parallax information to produce a doppler effect on some of the stars.
